Optimal performance can only be achieved through intelligent action. Peak physical performance of any athlete is reached and maintained with forensic monitoring and control – of energy consumed, of exertion, of performance – based on the physical requirements of the sport. For ships, as the long-distance runners of global trade, the same is true. To operate at optimal efficiency, ship operators and managers need to be able to carefully monitor and control the fueling requirements, energy consumption and operational performance of each vessel.

This requires tangible evidence of how a vessel operates against set criterion or key performance indicators (KPI’s) and baseline measurements for the vessel, which can be compared over time and in comparison, with its equivalent competition. This insight is gained by analysing how performance is improved or inhibited by control factors such as the operating environment or the application of performance enhancing technologies. With eco-efficiency technologies for commercial vessels – which are designed to improve performance and reduce costs – data is key. This is very much the case with hull coating solutions.

Fouling and mechanical damage on the hull can increase the engine power required by a vessel to maintain a certain speed, by up to 20 per cent. However, by using intelligent software and working closely with coatings experts, long-term trends can be monitored using in-service KPI’s to develop and deliver an optimum protective coatings solution for that vessel. Importantly, the empirical measurements that result can be utilised to showcase a vessel’s performance to customers, financiers and other stakeholders; to show how a vessel stacks up against its competition.

Getting into SHAPE
To support shipowners continued search for greater fuel efficiencies, Hempel developed a new hull performance system, SHAPE (Systems for Hull and Propeller Efficiency) earlier this year. It is founded on the ISO 19030 framework which defines a methodology to measure changes in hull and propeller performance and details a set of relevant performance indicators for hull and propeller maintenance. This arms shipowners with extremely detailed and accurate information on the performance of their vessels – translating what is happening below the waterline into hard, empirical facts.
In line with the principles and requirements of ISO 19030, Hempel’s SHAPE monitors a vessel’s long-term trends using in service key performance indicators (KPIs). SHAPE then combines elements of hull and propeller efficiency optimisation to maximise the quality of performance data analysis. This allows Hempel to deliver expert advice and solutions to every ship operator, allowing them to maximise their hull efficiency and return on investment by making tangible improvements to their hull maintenance or vessel operations.

The methodology in the metrics
Six key stages comprise the SHAPE measuring and monitoring system. First, the vessel’s individual speed power reference curves are established. This is followed by collecting in-service data which is then cleansed and purified to eliminate extreme operating conditions and the effects of environmental factors.
Next, a precise speed loss calculation is performed. This is a critical measure for understanding vessel performance and fuel efficiency as power increase and speed loss are directly related. From this, the four KPIs are calculated:

Dry docking performance – calculates the changes in hull and propeller performance over drydocking periods.
In service performance – calculates the effectiveness of the vessel’s hull and propeller solutions.
Maintenance trigger – calculates the change in hull and propeller performance over a given period between drydocking and in-service use.
Maintenance effect – calculates the change in hull and propeller performance before and after a maintenance event.
Following this in-depth analysis, Hempel can offer solid, valuable technical advice to the ship operator, advising them on the operational decisions they can take to positively impact their fuel efficiency and ensure best practice in vessel maintenance. SHAPE is based on the ISO 19030 framework. In today’s increasingly stringent operating environment, all parties in the shipping supply chain are demanding increased transparency across operations, being able to prove your strength with numbers is key.
