The International Maritime Organization (IMO) has presented Kuwait Oil Tanker Company (KOTC) with a special certificate in recognition of the role its vessel played in one of the largest peacetime maritime rescue operations in history.
The oil tanker Al Salami in 2014 played a key role in the rescue of 536 refugees in international waters, providing shelter, medical care and food to those rescued before they could be handed over to Italian authorities.
Sheikh Talal Khaled Al-Ahmad Al-Sabah, CEO of KOTC was presented with a “Certificate of Appreciation” from Kitack Lim, secretary general of the IMO.
“We appreciate the recognition of the efforts of our crew during this rescue and we would like to thank all individuals as well as organisations that work hard for a safe and efficient shipping industry,” said Lim.
